Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham finds herself at the center of a social media storm as she addresses the mounting backlash over her perceived role in supporting the current government.
Following her public endorsement of the then-incoming President and subsequent alignment with political figures. However, the actress remains resolute in defending her right to choose and support any candidate or party of her preference in a democratic society.
During the Instagram Live session, Abraham expressed her frustration with the incessant cyber-bullying directed not only towards her but also towards her family, particularly her children.
She vehemently denounced the practice of targeting innocent individuals, stating, “What did my children and family do to you? If you want to curse me, curse me. Do whatever you want to do to me. Those children don’t even know anything yet you curse”
The actress emphasized the importance of respecting individuals’ rights to express their political opinions without fear of persecution or harassment. “It is democracy.
It is my right to choose and vote for whoever I want to vote for,” she asserted, underscoring the fundamental principle of freedom of choice in a democratic society.
Addressing speculations that she had received financial compensation for her political endorsements, Abraham categorically denied such claims, affirming, “I’m saying it publicly I never collected a dime to support Tinubu or Sanwo-Olu. I’m not that kind of person. That is not the kind of upbringing I have.”
Reflecting on past elections and the diversity of political opinions within Nigerian society, Abraham recalled previous instances where her preferred candidate differed from the majority’s choice.
Despite facing criticism and opposition, she remained steadfast in her convictions, highlighting the need for mutual respect and tolerance amidst differing viewpoints.
The actress’s candid remarks shed light on the pervasive issue of online harassment and the toll it takes on individuals and their families.
Abraham’s decision to confront the issue head-on signals a shift towards greater awareness and advocacy against cyber-bullying in Nigeria’s digital landscape.
