Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Shaboozey has etched his name in music history by becoming the first Black male artist to simultaneously top both Billboard’s Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts with his breakout hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”
This achievement, reported by Billboard, places the Virginia native alongside Beyoncé as only the second Black artist ever to achieve this dual chart success.
“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has not only made waves by topping multiple Billboard charts but has also secured its place in music history as the first single to reach the top 10 on country, pop, adult pop, and rhythmic airplay charts concurrently.
Earlier this year, Shaboozey made headlines by replacing Beyoncé at the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country chart, marking a historic consecutive top position by two Black artists.
The 29-year-old artist, known for his dynamic blend of country and contemporary influences, has been riding high on the success of his latest project, “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going,” which debuted impressively at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 in June.
This album features the chart-topping single “Tipsy” and showcases Shaboozey’s versatility and musical prowess.
Recently, Shaboozey captivated audiences at the 2024 BET Awards in Los Angeles with a memorable performance of “Tipsy,” featuring an interpolation of the throwback rap song “Tipsy” by J-Kwon.
Despite country music’s traditional underrepresentation at awards shows like BET, Shaboozey’s performance was a standout moment, solidifying his broad appeal and musical influence.
Amidst his skyrocketing career, Shaboozey has been warmly embraced by the music industry, evidenced by his presence at Michael Rubin’s exclusive Fourth of July weekend party alongside other luminaries.
With a sold-out tour on the horizon, Shaboozey’s journey from Virginia to global superstardom continues to captivate audiences and reshape the boundaries of contemporary music.
Recently, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, praised the remarkable achievement of Shaboozey and two other Nigerians in the Diaspora for making significant strides on the international stage.
Highlighting their accomplishments on X.com on Wednesday, Obi expressed pride in their contributions and optimism for Nigeria’s future.
He said, “Next is Nigerian-American singer, Collins Obinna Chibueze, popularly known as Shaboozey, who has made history by topping the US Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Shaboozey rose to global prominence with his hit song ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’”
Shaboozey gained attention and popularity for his distinctive blend of country music infused with elements of Afrobeat and contemporary pop.
He had part of his high school education in Nigeria.
His breakthrough came with the hit song ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’, which topped the US Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
