Singer, Simi, has walked back on a statement she made about her musical choices after facing a backlash over her recent comments about fellow musicians.
In an interview on the ‘Zero Conditions’ podcast, Simi revealed that she only listened to her husband Adekunle Gold’s music, sparking criticism from fans and fellow artists who perceived her remarks as arrogant.
During the interview, Simi stated, “I don’t know anybody. The reason I know my husband’s songs is because I am married to him,” Simi said.
“The reason I am listening to my album now is because it just came out. In another few weeks, I won’t listen as much,”
She also mentioned her appreciation for artists like Post Malone and J. Cole but clarified that she does not regularly listen to their music.
This admission led to widespread criticism from netizens who felt her comments were dismissive of other artists’ contributions.
In response to the uproar, Simi took to her official X account to address the controversy.
She admitted that her comments were “weird” and acknowledged that they could be perceived as arrogant.
She explained that her remarks were made in a casual setting and that the excerpt shared online did not fully capture the context of her statements.
“In hindsight, I should have approached this conversation more carefully. I didn’t realize it might come off as cocky,” Simi wrote.
“It was banter in the wrong place. That’s why I should have been more careful. It was a 2-hour interview with drinking and cussing, so I was chatting like I would with friends.
“It hurts that the clip and headline were intentionally misleading.
“It’s impossible to watch the entire interview and get the same impression as from the clip that was shared.”
Simi’s retraction comes after the clip from the podcast interview was widely circulated, leading to significant backlash.
The singer, whose real name is Simisola Kosoko, and her husband, Adekunle Gold, married in January 2019 and share a daughter, Adejare.
Gold’s recent release, “Look What You Made Me Do,” a tribute to their fifth wedding anniversary, has been well-received, further intensifying the scrutiny of Simi’s comments.
