    I Watched In Pain As Doctors Battled To Save Onyeka Onwenu – Peter Obi

    The former governor of Anambra State and ex-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described the harrowing experience of watching the legendary singer’s final moments.

    On Tuesday evening, Onyeka Onwenu was performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the founder and CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

    The event was a glittering affair, celebrating both Onwenu’s legacy and Okoli’s contributions to the pharmaceutical industry.

    Onwenu, known for her powerful voice and remarkable contributions to Nigerian music, gave what would turn out to be her final performance.

    According to eyewitnesses, after delivering an electrifying rendition of her well-loved hit “One Love Keep Us Together,” Onwenu appeared to be in good spirits.

    However, moments later, she sat down, drank some water, and suddenly collapsed. Immediate efforts to revive her were made, and she was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos where she was later confirmed dead.

    Peter Obi, who was present at the event, described the experience in a somber statement shared on social media.

    “Yesterday provided a very devastating moment for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory,” Obi wrote.

    “I was present at the event where Onyeka Onwenu performed a couple of her songs, ending up with her famous song, ‘One Love Keep Us Together.’ It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow.”

    Obi continued, “Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down and drank some water and immediately collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital. I followed her to the hospital.

    “I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life, doing everything possible to bring her back to life but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone.”

    Despite the valiant efforts of the medical team, Onyeka Onwenu was pronounced dead at the hospital after more than two hours of intense struggle.

    Her passing has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond, as tributes pour in for the celebrated artist.

    Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, in Lagos, was a towering figure in Nigerian music.

    Her career, which began in the 1970s, was marked by a series of influential and beloved songs that have left an indelible mark on Nigerian culture.

    Known affectionately as the “elegant stallion,” Onwenu’s music spanned various themes, from social commentary to celebrating African identity and resilience.

    In the days leading up to her death, Onwenu had been working on a new project to chronicle her extensive career.

    In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she expressed her excitement about producing a film that would detail her experiences in the music industry.

    “I am currently working on a film that will chronicle my experiences in the music industry from the 70s to the present day. Having been a part of this narrative for decades, I have a wealth of stories to share,” she had said.

    Onwenu’s contributions extended beyond music. She was deeply involved in philanthropy, recently releasing a single titled “Abu Otito (Songs of Praise)” with proceeds supporting widows through the Rose of Sharon Foundation.

    Her charitable efforts also included paying school fees for underprivileged children and offering civic education to foster cultural identity among students.

    Her impact on Nigerian music was profound. Onwenu’s duet with King Sunny Ade, “Wait for Me,” addressed crucial issues such as population explosion and family planning.

    Her song “African Woman” celebrated the strength and beauty of African women, while “Sodom and Gomorrah” provided moral and biblical reflections. Tracks like “Iyogogo,” “Dancing in the Sun,” and “Choices” further showcased her versatility and enduring influence.

    Peter Obi expressed his heartfelt condolences to Onwenu’s family and the broader entertainment industry.

    “My heart goes out to her children and family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” he wrote.

    “May we find the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. Onwenu was a national treasure, a shining star who inspired generations with her music, activism, and strong dedication to the arts. Her passing is a tremendous loss for the entire nation, and she will be deeply missed.”

    Obi also extended his thanks to those who supported Onwenu during her final moments. “I want to thank everyone who, together with us, accompanied her to the hospital yesterday.

    “Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, and Mr. Okpara, who were with her during her last moments. Governor Alex Otti joined us also, and Mr. Femi Ajayi, who equally returned to the hospital this morning when we had to finalize everything about her passing.”
