Popular social media personality and controversial cross-dresser Okuneye Idris, known as Bobrisky, was removed from a KLM flight to Amsterdam late on October 31.
Bobrisky, whose fame has been driven by a colorful online persona, took to Instagram to alert his followers about the incident, alleging that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was behind his arrest. He claimed he was injured in a scuffle with immigration officers, posting, “They hurt me, my hand is bruised… they say EFCC is behind this.”
According to the EFCC, Bobrisky’s situation is part of a larger investigation, as the agency recently confirmed that both he and former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, are under scrutiny for alleged financial misconduct.
The high-drama incident took place at an international airport, where Bobrisky was reportedly preparing to board a flight to Amsterdam. Eyewitnesses report that immigration officers approached him on the flight, asked him to step off, and subsequently detained him.
For many Nigerians, the incident has added to the public fascination with Bobrisky, a figure who has long courted controversy through his flamboyant lifestyle and bold personality. Speaking to his followers on Instagram, he shared: “They came for me, immigration took me off the plane. I’m hurt. This is all because of EFCC.”
Though no official statement has been made by the EFCC specifically on the arrest, reports suggest that the agency has been watching Bobrisky over suspected money laundering. His fame and high-profile lifestyle have made him a frequent subject of debate, with both ardent fans and outspoken critics.
Meanwhile, Betta Edu, a former minister known for her work in humanitarian services, is also facing EFCC scrutiny. Edu’s tenure as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has been called into question over alleged misconduct and financial irregularities.
During a recent press briefing in Abuja, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, represented by Public Affairs Director Wilson Uwujaren, stated, “The investigation into Betta Edu has been ongoing. We are thoroughly examining all aspects and handling this matter with the utmost diligence.”
Edu, who previously held significant influence in welfare-related government programs, is being investigated for possible misuse of government funds. Uwujaren explained that over 40 financial accounts connected to Edu’s activities have been placed under scrutiny as part of the ongoing probe. He added, “These investigations take time, but our commitment to accountability is unwavering.”
