Nollywood star and politician Desmond Elliott has broken his silence over recent rumors questioning his sexuality.
The controversy erupted after a blog listed names of several prominent Nigerian celebrities, including Elliott, alleging they were gay. This unverified post spread like wildfire on social media, sparking a wave of reactions and speculation.
In an exclusive interview with TVC, Elliott addressed the allegations directly. He was clear and unapologetic in his response, dismissing the claims as baseless and saying he has far more important priorities.
“Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it did not reduce or increase my life?” Elliott asked, firmly denouncing the rumors.
He went on to emphasize that these accusations are mere opinions without foundation and that he feels no need to clarify his sexuality for public acceptance. “It is an opinion that is being conceived,” he said. “I do not think it is necessary for me to come out and say it’s true or not true; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good.”
Elliott’s response has sparked a range of reactions, with some fans expressing support and admiration for his calm and mature approach, while others continue to discuss the rumors online. His statement, however, left no room for doubt regarding his stance on the matter.
“So let me say right here,” Elliott declared, “I am straight. You can never have anyone straighter than me.”
The actor-turned-politician went further to comment on issues of identity, respect, and the law. While advocating for individuals’ right to personal expression within legal boundaries, he added, “If you feel you identify as something as long as it is within the law, people do not have to accept it; do you.”
He then directed a message to those who thrive on spreading rumors for attention, remarking, “If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is left to them, but I do not care really. Do you and enjoy yourself, but do it within the law and with respect to your neighbours.”
The speculation, however, has raised questions about the intense pressure and intrusion Nigerian celebrities face in their personal lives.
In recent years, Nigerian celebrities have increasingly found themselves at the receiving end of rumors about their personal lives, particularly around sensitive topics such as sexuality. With social media amplifying both support and criticism, the pressure on public figures to clarify or defend themselves has only grown.
For many in the entertainment industry, the constant scrutiny of their private lives can be overwhelming. Elliott’s approach to handling such situations may serve as a lesson for others who face similar challenges, highlighting the importance of self-assurance and focusing on what truly matters.
