Security operatives in Akwa Ibom have demolished the headquarters of the proscribed Ibom Youth Council (IYC).
The group, banned by Governor Umo Eno for alleged criminal activities, operated from a building in Ikot Isighe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
A joint security team, acting on credible intelligence, raided the location earlier this week.
Members of the group fled the scene as the operatives stormed the premises.
Three suspects were arrested during the operation, though their identities remain undisclosed.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Timfon John, confirmed the operation in a statement issued in Uyo.
“Following the proscription of the Ibom Youth Council by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, and his directive to security agencies to immediately end the group’s nefarious activities, a joint security team visited the building serving as the operational headquarters of the illegal group,” ASP John stated.
She added that the group had been involved in procuring arms, conducting military training, and planning large-scale unrest.
Investigations revealed that the group intended to launch their disruptive plans in late 2024, with the goal of sustaining chaos into the new year.
“The security apparatus, with the full backing of the state government, is determined to use all legal means to maintain Akwa Ibom’s hard-earned status as the most peaceful state in the country,” ASP John affirmed.
The demolished building had served as a hub for the group’s illegal activities.
Security forces also warned landlords in the state to vet their tenants thoroughly.
“Any property found to be used for criminal purposes, especially subversive activities, will be demolished, and the owners treated as accomplices,” the PPRO said.
Governor Eno, who had proscribed the IYC on November 26, issued a stern warning against activities threatening the state’s peace.
The directive was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong.
“This proscription is made under the powers conferred on the Governor by Section 71 of the Criminal Code Law, 39 Vol.2, Laws of Akwa Ibom State 2022, and will be cited as the Ibom Youth Council (Proscription) Order 2024,” the statement read.
The Governor’s move has been met with widespread approval from residents who commend the government’s efforts to maintain peace.
ASP John also assured citizens of enhanced security measures during the festive season.
“The citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State are assured of their safety this yuletide season and beyond, as security personnel are working tirelessly to protect lives and property,” she said.
However, some human rights groups have raised concerns over the demolition, arguing that due process must be followed to prevent misuse of state power.
“The government must balance security with respect for legal rights,” a local activist noted.
