FCT Police Ban Knockouts During Christmas, New Year Celebrations

    Share

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a ban on the use of firecrackers, also known as knockouts, during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. This move is aimed at ensuring the safety of all residents within the FCT and protecting lives and property throughout the festive season.

The Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, issued a statement on Saturday, officially confirming the ban and highlighting the reasons behind the decision.

According to Adeh, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, Olatunji Disu, emphasized that the ban had become necessary due to the risks associated with firecrackers and fireworks.

“The use of firecrackers and fireworks can lead to unnecessary panic and anxiety within the city, especially among the vulnerable, such as children and the elderly,” Adeh explained.

She further pointed out that fireworks and firecrackers pose significant fire hazards, which could lead to preventable incidents. The police have therefore decided to take proactive measures to reduce these risks during the holiday season.

“Violators of this ban, including both sellers and users of firecrackers and fireworks, will face arrest and prosecution under the law,” Adeh warned. The statement also encouraged residents and community leaders to raise awareness about the dangers associated with the use of such items.

The ban comes in light of past incidents where firecrackers have caused injuries and fire outbreaks. The FCT Police are determined to avoid such incidents during the 2024 festive season.

Police officers will be on high alert throughout the holiday period to monitor for any violations. The residents of FCT have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, including the illegal sale or use of fireworks, to the police.

To make this possible, the police have provided emergency numbers for residents to report violations: 08032003913, 08061581938, and 07057337653.

“We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and remain mindful of their safety and the safety of others,” Adeh said.

The police also took the opportunity to wish all residents of FCT a peaceful and joyful Christmas and New Year. The FCT Police Command has expressed its commitment to maintaining peace and order throughout the festive season and beyond.

This year’s ban follows similar initiatives from previous years. Authorities have long cited the hazards posed by firecrackers, which include fires, injuries, and disturbances in communities.

Many Nigerians associate the festive season with fireworks, which are traditionally used to mark celebrations and create a joyful atmosphere. However, the dangers of these items are significant, with several communities across the country reporting accidents in past years.

While many may be disappointed by the ban, it is clear that the safety of all residents is a priority for the police this festive season. The FCT Police Command hopes that the public will support their efforts in maintaining a peaceful and safe environment during the holidays.

With New Year celebrations also on the horizon, the FCT Police are calling on everyone to heed the ban and avoid any behavior that could lead to harm. Those caught flouting the law could face serious consequences, as the police have vowed to ensure strict enforcement.
