Owa Obokun: New Ilesa Monarch-Elect Commences Traditional Coronation Rites

    Share

The historic town of Ijesaland in Osun State has entered a sacred phase of cultural preservation as the newly appointed Owa Obokun Adimula, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, begins the mandatory traditional ascension rites. These rites, deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the Ijesa people, serve as a spiritual and ceremonial preparation for his reign as Ajimoko III.

The traditional activities commenced today at Igbadae, where Oba Haastrup will seek blessings from Ajibogun Orunaja Aganniyeye Ekun at Orori Obokun. This sacred stop marks the beginning of a week-long journey across Ijesaland, involving prayers, rituals, and ceremonial obligations aimed at ensuring the unity, peace, and prosperity of the people.

In line with Ijesa tradition, Oba Haastrup will visit Ilu Ikin on Sunday to perform the Iwule—a ritualistic prayer for tranquility and communal harmony. By Monday, his royal procession will arrive at Ilu Owari, also known as Ipole, where the Kabiyesi will invoke blessings of good health and prosperity at the revered Orori Obokun Owari shrine.

On Tuesday, the journey transitions to Ilu Owa (Ilowa), followed by a stop in Ibokun at the historic Obaloro House. There, Oba Haastrup will observe nighttime rituals, which, according to cultural lore, hold the essence of Ijesa’s spiritual connection.

These nocturnal ceremonies inspired the oriki (praise poetry) describing Ijesa royalty as “omo oloro ajinjin (aajin),” emphasizing the mysterious and sacred aura surrounding their traditions. On Wednesday, he will conclude this phase of the rites at Lemodu House before assuming his full responsibilities as the paramount ruler.

With preparations in full swing, significant efforts have been made to rejuvenate and revitalize traditional abodes, including Obokun House. These sacred spaces, believed to house the spirits of Ijesaland’s ancient deities (Irunmole), play a pivotal role in safeguarding the community’s spiritual and physical well-being.

In an effort to maintain order during this culturally sensitive period, curfews will be imposed as needed. Residents have been urged to comply with these restrictions to ensure the smooth execution of the rites.

Speaking ahead of the ceremonies, Oba Haastrup appealed to all Ijesa sons and daughters, both at home and abroad, to support him through prayers and positive thoughts. “Our heritage connects us to the past and must remain sacred, protected from any form of desecration,” the Kabiyesi stated.

He further emphasized the need for collective efforts in fostering the growth and development of Ijesaland. “The progress of our land lies in the hands of God and the unwavering support of our people,” he added.

Oba Haastrup’s ascension follows the passing of the previous Owa Obokun Adimula, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, on September 11, 2024. His appointment, approved by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, marks the continuation of a revered lineage from the Bilaro Olu-Odo Ruling House.

Despite a court order initially restraining the selection process, Oba Haastrup emerged victorious after a keenly contested election involving nine candidates. Governor Adeleke lauded the due process observed in the monarch’s selection, urging the community to rally behind their new leader to promote peace and unity.

At 76, Oba Haastrup brings decades of leadership experience to the throne. A former deputy governor of Osun State, he served under Isiaka Adeleke, the elder brother of the current governor, from 1992 to 1993. His vast political and administrative background is expected to bolster his reign as he navigates the complexities of traditional and modern governance.

The ascension rites reflect the depth of Ijesa culture, with each step imbued with symbolic meaning. According to local historians, these rituals are not merely ceremonial but serve as a spiritual bridge connecting the community to its ancestors.

The Ijesa people hold their heritage in high esteem, viewing it as a source of identity and resilience. The revitalization of traditional practices under Oba Haastrup’s leadership is seen as a reaffirmation of their commitment to preserving the values and customs that define them.

As Oba Haastrup embarks on this sacred journey, he has made it clear that his reign will prioritize peace, unity, and development in Ijesaland. His call for collective prayers underscores his belief in the spiritual foundation of leadership, while his appeal for cooperation reflects his vision of a harmonious and progressive community.
