Mohbad: Yomi Fabiyi Calls for Wife’s Arrest,  Alleges Suppression of Evidence

    Share

The mysterious death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Promise Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has taken a dramatic turn as Yomi Fabiyi, the convener of the Break the Silence Foundation, demands the arrest and interrogation of his wife, Cynthia Wunmi Aloba, and other family members.

At a world press conference held on Wednesday, Fabiyi accused the authorities of dragging their feet on the investigation into the death of the 27-year-old artist, who passed away on September 12, 2023. The event, attended by activists, Nigerian youths, and human rights advocates, underscored the growing frustration over the unresolved case.

“Mohbad’s death cannot be allowed to fade into the archives of unresolved deaths in Nigeria,” Fabiyi declared passionately. He emphasized the importance of the #JusticeForMohbad movement as a collective demand for transparency and accountability in the case.

    Claims of Suppression and Allegations

Fabiyi revealed shocking allegations during the conference, including an alleged attempt by a close associate of Mohbad’s family to sell incriminating video evidence for ₦3 million. The video allegedly showed a violent altercation between Mohbad and his wife, which may have contributed to his fatal injuries.

“I reported this matter to the Lagos State Police Command and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Fabiyi stated. “But despite this, progress has been painstakingly slow, and there are deliberate efforts to suppress this case.”

Adding to the controversy, Fabiyi disclosed that a suspect, Habeeb Damola Ayinde, confessed to impersonating Mohbad’s younger brother, Adura Aloba, on social media to extort money in exchange for the video. The revelation has deepened concerns over the handling of the investigation and the credibility of those involved.

    Demands for Justice

The Break the Silence Foundation presented a list of demands to ensure justice for the late singer:

    1. Arrest and Questioning of Key Individuals: The Foundation urged the immediate arrest of Cynthia Wunmi Aloba and Adura Aloba as primary suspects.
    2. Corroboration of Witness Statements: Mohbad’s aunt, Mrs. Folashade, should be called to verify her account of finding blood-stained blankets on the day of his death.
    3. Federal Intervention: The Foundation called on President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Inspector General of Police to take over the case if the Lagos State Police Command fails to show tangible progress within seven days.
    4. Prosecution of Suspects: All implicated individuals should be charged to court by March 2025.
    5. Accountability for Obstructive Officers: Police officers found guilty of obstructing justice should face disciplinary action and prosecution.

Public Outcry and Concerns Over Justice

Fabiyi’s demands come against the backdrop of widespread public discontent. Mohbad’s death has sparked national outrage, with fans, family members, and activists raising suspicions of foul play. Many believe that justice delayed could lead to justice denied, and Fabiyi warned of the dangerous implications of a failed investigation.

“Justice for Mohbad is not just about one man; it is a fight for accountability, fairness, and the rule of law in Nigeria,” he stated.

He cautioned against the erosion of public trust in the judicial system and the rise of jungle justice if the government fails to act decisively.

New Revelations Add to the Mystery

One of the more startling claims made at the conference was the allegation of evidence tampering. Fabiyi accused certain parties of attempting to profit from the tragedy by selling key evidence, which he believes could unlock the truth behind Mohbad’s death.

“Why has the investigation not led to any meaningful results despite the confession of an impersonator and evidence pointing to foul play?” Fabiyi questioned.

The slow progress has led to calls for international attention. Fabiyi appealed to human rights organizations and foreign observers to join the fight for justice, highlighting the risk of apathy in cases like Mohbad’s.

    Broader Implications for Nigeria

The case has highlighted systemic issues in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, including allegations of police inefficiency and corruption. Activists argue that resolving Mohbad’s case could set a precedent for future investigations involving high-profile individuals.

“If we fail Mohbad, we fail every Nigerian who deserves justice,” Fabiyi asserted, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand accountability.

    Government’s Role Under Scrutiny

The Foundation’s call for federal intervention has added pressure on political leaders. While there has been no official response from President Bola Tinubu or Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, public expectation remains high.

Activists argue that Mohbad’s death is a litmus test for the government’s commitment to justice. Failure to deliver justice could damage the country’s image both locally and internationally, especially as it pertains to human rights and the rule of law.

    Renewed Commitment to Justice

The press conference concluded with a solemn pledge from Fabiyi and his team to ensure that Mohbad’s death is not in vain. “This is about more than one man. It is about proving that Nigeria can stand for justice, that we can protect the vulnerable, and that we can hold the powerful accountable,” Fabiyi declared.
