The newly re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has expressed deep gratitude to party leaders, including Chief Bisi Akande and former Governor Olusegun Osoba, for their instrumental roles in his return to office. Obasa’s re-election to the top position in the Lagos State legislature came after a turbulent period that saw him impeached earlier this year.
Following his swearing-in, Obasa announced an indefinite adjournment of the Assembly, marking a pause in legislative activities. This move has drawn attention from political observers, who believe it reflects a fresh start and a desire for renewed unity within the Assembly.
The re-election of Obasa as Speaker comes after a dramatic series of events earlier this year. In January, Obasa was impeached by members of the Assembly over a range of allegations, including accusations of poor leadership, high-handedness, frequent lateness to plenary sessions, and abuse of office. These allegations led to a temporary removal of Obasa from office and the creation of significant divisions within the House.
The impeachment, however, was not the end of Obasa’s political journey. Despite the setbacks, the Speaker was able to navigate through the controversy and, with the backing of key political figures and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), managed to secure his return to the position.
In his speech after being sworn in, Obasa took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the party leadership for their unwavering support. “I am deeply grateful to our party leaders, particularly Chief Bisi Akande and former Governor Olusegun Osoba. Your support has been invaluable, and I am thankful for the trust you have shown in me,” Obasa said.
In his remarks, Obasa highlighted the importance of unity and love among the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the legislature over the past few months, but reiterated his commitment to serving the interests of Lagosians.
“We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved and determined to serve their interest and protect their interest always,” Obasa stated. “Our major responsibility is to represent them and ensure that their voices are heard through our work.”
Obasa’s call for unity comes at a crucial time, as the recent divisions within the Assembly could potentially affect the efficiency of governance in Lagos State. His decision to announce the adjournment of the Assembly could be seen as a strategic move to allow for reconciliation and healing within the legislative body.
The Speaker also expressed confidence in the House’s ability to resolve internal conflicts and work together for the greater good of the state. “What is happening here today shows that the Lagos State House of Assembly is capable, and is a House of integrity,” he said. “It is a house that has internal mechanisms to resolve issues in the interest of the institution and our party.”Obasa’s words during the plenary session highlight his commitment to prioritising the welfare of Lagosians. Despite the controversies and political battles, he reaffirmed that the primary purpose of the Assembly is to serve the people of Lagos State.
Today, as he resumes his position as Speaker, Obasa is keen on moving forward with a renewed sense of purpose. “Today is not the day for speech-making, but to celebrate my colleagues and thank them for all they have been doing,” he said. “I am sure we will continue to work together in peace, love, and harmony.”
