Minority Leader Calls for Reduction of Natasha Akpoti’s Suspension to 3 Months

Senator Patrick Abba Moro, the Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, has called for the reduction of Senator Natasha Akpoti’s suspension from six months to three. Akpoti, a representative from Kogi State, has been under scrutiny after a series of allegations led to calls for her suspension. However, Moro’s appeal suggests a more lenient approach, urging the Senate and President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a reduction in her suspension period.

In a statement made to the press, Senator Moro argued that while the Senate is expected to approve the recommendations for Akpoti’s suspension, a reduction in the length of the suspension would be more appropriate. He further explained that three months would be sufficient to allow for restitution without unduly punishing the Senator for her actions.

Senator Natasha Akpoti has been at the centre of a political storm following an alleged violation of Senate rules. While the details of the allegations against her are still being debated, it is understood that she was accused of conduct unbecoming of a Senator and breaching parliamentary decorum. The accusations, which have led to calls for disciplinary action, include a range of charges related to her behaviour and remarks both inside and outside the Senate chambers.

The situation escalated when the Senate’s Committee on Ethics and Privileges made its recommendation for her suspension. The committee found that Akpoti’s actions violated certain codes of conduct and warranted a six-month suspension from Senate proceedings. The recommendation has been under review, with discussions ongoing about whether it should be upheld, reduced, or amended.

In the face of growing calls for Akpoti’s suspension to be enforced, Senator Patrick Abba Moro, who is known for his leadership within the opposition ranks, has intervened with a plea for leniency. Speaking about the matter, Moro said, “We plead that while implementing these recommendations, which are likely to be approved by the Senate, the six-month suspension for Senator Natasha be reduced to three months, if convenient for the Senate and Mr. President. Three months is sufficient for some level of restitution.”

Moro’s statement reflects a strategic desire to balance accountability with fairness. While he acknowledges the seriousness of the allegations against Akpoti, he believes that a shorter suspension would allow for necessary restitution without undermining the integrity of the Senate.
