    Share

The Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA) in Enugu State, Barrister Chijioke Ezugwu, thwarted a kidnapping attempt on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. The incident occurred when heavily armed kidnappers, disguised as herdsmen and armed with AK-47 rifles, ambushed a road leading to Umulokpa, the LGA headquarters. Unbeknownst to them, the first vehicle approaching was Ezugwu’s convoy, returning from a security meeting aimed at combating such criminal activities.

As the convoy approached the ambush site, the kidnappers sprang into action, attempting to halt the vehicle. Displaying swift leadership and courage, Ezugwu, who has a background in security matters, immediately exited his vehicle and confronted the armed assailants. Despite being fired upon, Ezugwu and his security aides returned fire, causing the kidnappers to retreat into the nearby bush. Eyewitnesses reported that the chairman and his team pursued the criminals briefly before resuming their journey.

In response to the growing security challenges, Ezugwu has taken proactive steps to enhance safety in the region. In November 2024, he initiated the recruitment and training of 320 neighborhood watch operatives across the 16 wards of Uzo-Uwani LGA. This initiative aims to complement state efforts in curbing crime and ensuring the safety of residents, particularly farmers who have been frequent targets of kidnappers and other criminal elements. The operatives were selected based on criteria such as age, physical fitness, and absence of criminal records, ensuring a dedicated and capable security force.

Ezugwu emphasized the importance of agriculture to the local economy, stating that the security challenges, including kidnappings and attacks on farmers, have significantly impacted food production and the development of Uzo-Uwani communities. He urged traditional rulers, town unions, religious leaders, and parents to collaborate in maintaining peace and order.

In addition to local initiatives, Ezugwu has been working closely with formal security agencies to address the root causes of insecurity. His administration has focused on enhancing intelligence gathering, restructuring neighborhood watch operations, and establishing farm protection squads. These measures aim to protect agricultural areas and ensure that farmers can work without fear of attack. Ezugwu has also been actively participating in both day and night patrols alongside vigilante groups and other security outfits in the area.
