The Borno State Police Command has launched an investigation into a suspected case of infanticide after the lifeless body of a newborn was discovered in a pit toilet at the Kuya Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Monguno on April 24, 2025.
The disturbing discovery was made early in the morning, around 6:30 AM, when the camp chairman, Faki Isa, reported the incident. According to reliable sources, the body of the newborn was found abandoned in the toilet pit, raising concerns that the infant may have been deliberately left there by an unknown woman.
Upon receiving the report, the police immediately dispatched a team of investigators to the scene. They examined the area and retrieved the body, which was then taken to the General Hospital Monguno. A medical doctor confirmed that the infant had already passed away. The body was subsequently released to the camp chairman for burial.
The police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case, but the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are working to track down the individual responsible for abandoning the newborn in such a distressing manner.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Kuya IDP Camp and the wider Monguno community. The camp, home to many displaced families due to ongoing insecurity in the region, has witnessed its fair share of hardships. However, the discovery of the newborn’s body has raised serious concerns about the safety and wellbeing of the camp’s residents, especially vulnerable individuals such as women and children.
Infanticide, the act of deliberately killing an infant, remains a rare but deeply concerning crime in Nigeria. While the motive behind the suspected crime remains unclear, the police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring that justice is served. Authorities have also urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Local authorities have called for increased vigilance within IDP camps across the state, highlighting the need to safeguard vulnerable populations, including women and children, who may be at risk of exploitation or harm. As the investigation continues, the people of Monguno remain hopeful that the authorities will uncover the truth behind this tragic event and take appropriate action.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by internally displaced persons in Borno State, where living conditions are often harsh, and security concerns remain a significant issue. It also underlines the urgent need for increased support and protection for those living in IDP camps across the country.
The police have reassured the public that they will continue their efforts to trace the individual responsible for this heinous act and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
