The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the death of an 18-year-old girl, who tragically passed away after undergoing an unsafe abortion. The incident, which occurred in Misau town, was reported on April 4, 2025, and has shocked the local community.
Police Spokesman, CSP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the arrests and provided details about the case. According to Wakil, the two primary suspects lured the young girl and engaged in sexual activities with her multiple times, which led to her pregnancy. Once the girl became pregnant, the suspects allegedly conspired with a third individual, Abubakar Mohammed, who was paid N40,000 to administer an injection meant to terminate the pregnancy.
Unfortunately, the injection caused serious health complications for the victim. She was rushed to the General Hospital in Misau, before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Azare Despite medical intervention, the girl was pronounced dead during treatment.
Wakil further revealed that the suspects had identified 10 other individuals believed to be involved in the incident, and these people are currently under investigation at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Misau.
The police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice in the case. CSP Wakil highlighted that the arrested suspects would be charged in court once investigations are completed. He reiterated the police’s dedication to upholding the law and bringing all those responsible for the tragic incident to justice.
Unsafe abortions remain a significant health risk in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where access to safe medical care is limited. The practice is illegal unless it is performed under medical supervision, and it often leads to severe health complications, as in this case.
The death of the young girl highlights the need for better education and access to reproductive health services, especially in underserved regions. Public health experts have called for greater awareness about the dangers of unsafe abortions and the importance of seeking professional medical help when faced with pregnancy-related health concerns.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging individuals to report any illegal abortion practices to the police, as part of efforts to curb the growing number of unsafe abortions and protect the health of young people in the state.
