    Afenifere Leader Adebanjo to Be Buried on May 3

    The family of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the late leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, has announced the funeral arrangements for the respected elder statesman. Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, died at his Lekki residence in Lagos.

    The family, in a statement released on Thursday, confirmed that the funeral service would take place on May 3, 2025, at St. Phillips Anglican Church in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode in Ogun State. The Thanksgiving Service will follow on May 4, 2025, at the same church.

    A Day of Tributes and Service of Songs will take place on April 30, 2025, at Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, starting at 2:00 p.m. The wake will be held on May 2, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Adebanjo’s country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.

    In their statement, Adebanjo’s children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, expressed gratitude for the support and prayers received from well-wishers since their father’s passing. They invited friends, political associates, and the general public to join in celebrating the life of a man who had a profound impact on Nigeria’s political history.

    The family reflected on Chief Adebanjo’s remarkable life, noting that he was born on April 10, 1928, in Ogun State. Adebanjo began his public journey as a journalist and later traveled to the United Kingdom to study law. His political involvement began in 1943 when he became a member of the Zikist Movement, and in 1951, he joined the Action Group’s youth wing, where he became a disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
