Two soldiers were killed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, in a landmine explosion along the Maiduguri-Damboa road in Borno State, a known hotspot for Boko Haram attacks. The explosion occurred near Nyeliri, a deserted village in Konduga Local Government Area, at around 11:00 a.m. The landmine was planted by suspected Boko Haram militants, who have continued to target the region with deadly attacks.
The blast killed the two soldiers and caused widespread panic among passengers traveling on the road, despite being under military escort. Motorists and travelers fled in all directions, fearing further attacks.
The Maiduguri-Damboa road remains a dangerous stretch, partially open to traffic but heavily monitored by security forces due to frequent insurgent activity. Just days earlier, on April 25, six charcoal hawkers were killed in the Mulgoi area. On April 27, two farmers were murdered by Boko Haram while working in their fields along Kanama Road in Damboa.
Alhaji Lawan Maina, the District Head of Damboa, confirmed the Tuesday attack and expressed concern over the worsening security situation, describing the insurgent violence as alarming and largely unchallenged.
Reacting to the escalating attacks, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) urged the Federal Government to supply the military with more advanced weaponry to curb the violence and protect civilians.
