The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a couple and six other suspects in connection with a series of car thefts across Abuja and beyond, including stolen vehicles traced to Lagos and Akwa Ibom.
According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the arrest followed a report on April 19, 2025, of a stolen gold Toyota Corolla (registration number ABC 570 FJ) from the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
Acting swiftly, operatives of the Command’s Scorpion Squad arrested one Yusuf Yunusa. Further investigation led to the arrest of his wife, Blessing Yusuf, in Kwali Area Council on April 25. She confessed to purchasing Toyota master keys from the Jumia online marketplace and giving them to her husband. She also admitted to helping him by creating distractions during the thefts.
In another case, police responded to a complaint on April 28 from a car buyer in Life Camp, Abuja, who suspected something unusual about a black Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC E-400. Investigations revealed the vehicle had been stolen from Lekki, Lagos. Five suspects were arrested: Idris Suleiman, Isiyaku Habibu, Ganiyu Sadiq, Idowu Akintunde, and Bello Muyideen. The suspects admitted to stealing the car from their employer.
Similarly, police tracked down a missing driver, George Idung, who had vanished with his employer’s unregistered Toyota Hilux Adventure. He was arrested in his hometown in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, where he was trying to sell the vehicle. The car was recovered.
All eight suspects are in police custody and will be charged to court after investigations are completed.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, urged residents to install vehicle tracking devices, avoid isolated parking areas, and ensure proper verification before buying vehicles.
