The Rivers State Government has come under fire following the recovery of official vehicles from the residence of the suspended Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu. The operation, carried out by naval personnel on April 25, has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the state’s handling of democratic processes.
According to the Democracy Watch Nigeria (DWN), the operation was executed “commando-style” on the orders of the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd). The group said two Toyota Hilux trucks and a Toyota Hiace bus were forcefully taken from Odu’s residence in the early hours of the day.
Vincent Wopara, DWN’s spokesperson, condemned the action, saying it was a clear case of executive overreach. “This is a deliberate attempt to intimidate the office of the Deputy Governor, a constitutionally recognized institution,” he stated. “It signals a disturbing trend of impunity and disrespect for the rule of law in Rivers State.”
Wopara called on Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to take note of what he described as a “growing disregard for democratic norms” under the current administration.
However, the Rivers State Government has defended its action, describing it as routine and necessary. In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media, Hector Igbikiowubo, the government said the vehicles were government property and had no business remaining with the suspended deputy governor over a month after her suspension.
“We question the motives of those politicizing this matter,” the statement read. “This is a lawful retrieval of state assets, not an act of intimidation. The administration remains committed to responsible governance and will not be distracted by political mischief.”
The incident comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State following the suspension of Professor Odu in March, after a political crisis led to the resignation of former Governor Nyesom Wike’s loyalists from key positions in the state.
