As Nigerian workers mark this year’s May Day, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has paid glowing tribute to their resilience, dedication, and vital role in national development, despite ongoing economic challenges.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio praised the Nigerian workforce for their hard work and for always putting the country first. He described workers as the “backbone of the Nigerian economy”, noting their sacrifices and continued commitment even in tough times.
“Today, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of Nigerian workers,” Akpabio said. “Despite obvious challenges, you remain the engine of our economy. Your resilience and productivity inspire hope for a better tomorrow.”
The Senate President also used the occasion to reaffirm the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws that improve workers’ welfare, rights, and working conditions. He promised that labour-friendly legislation would receive full attention under his leadership in the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio gave strong assurances that no worker would be punished for speaking out about their rights or seeking justice. “Under our watch, no Nigerian worker will be victimised for demanding their rights or going to court to seek redress,” he stated.
He further pledged continued collaboration between the Legislature and the Executive to address workers’ concerns, enhance job opportunities, and create an environment that fosters prosperity.
“Together, we shall build a brighter future for Nigerian workers and our great nation,” Akpabio concluded, while extending warm wishes to workers across the country for a peaceful and rewarding May Day celebration.
May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated globally every May 1 to honour the achievements of workers and advocate for improved labour rights and conditions. In Nigeria, it is also a time when workers highlight their struggles and push for better policies from the government.
