The sudden death of Nnena Miriam, a Nigerian nurse based in Leeds, United Kingdom, has sent shockwaves through the nursing community both in the UK and Nigeria. Miriam’s lifeless body was discovered by police after a missing person report was filed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
According to Fellow Nurses Africa, an organization dedicated to supporting the nursing profession in Africa, Miriam was reported missing after failing to show up for work. Her close friend, growing concerned after several attempts to contact her were unsuccessful, filed the missing person report. The police later found her body in her apartment.
Fellow Nurses Africa released a statement mourning her death, describing it as a huge loss to the healthcare community. “It is with heavy hearts that we report the sudden passing of Nnena Miriam, a devoted nurse in Leeds, United Kingdom,” the statement read. “Nurse Miriam was found dead in her room earlier this week. Her last shift was on Sunday, and alarm bells were raised when repeated calls went unanswered.”
Miriam had recently returned to the UK from Nigeria after her introduction ceremony ahead of her traditional marriage. Her tragic death, on what was supposed to be a joyous occasion, has left family, friends, and colleagues devastated.
“It was meant to be her special day — a day of celebration and new beginnings. Instead, her passing has left many in profound grief and with unanswered questions,” the statement added.
Her colleagues remembered Miriam for her professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to her patients. “Her untimely death is a great loss to the healthcare family she served so selflessly. She touched many lives with her care and compassion,” the statement continued.
As police investigations continue into the circumstances of her death, the nursing community is united in mourning the loss of a cherished member. Fellow Nurses Africa has expressed solidarity with her family and the global African nursing community during this difficult time.
Miriam’s death follows a similar incident in March 2024, when another Nigerian nurse, Chidimma Ezenyili, died after collapsing while caring for a patient in the UK. Both tragedies have raised concerns about the well-being of healthcare workers, especially those working far from home.
The police are continuing their investigation into the cause of Miriam’s death, and more details are expected to be released as the inquiry unfolds.
