The Police Command in Kebbi State has detained three officers for allegedly causing the death of a suspect while in their custody. The suspect, identified as Abubakar Auwal, was arrested on April 15 in connection with a theft case involving stolen truck rims.
According to the Police spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, Auwal was detained at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Jega. On the morning of April 16, during ongoing investigations, the suspect collapsed in detention. He was rushed to the general hospital in Jega but was pronounced dead later that evening.
Following the suspect’s death, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, ordered an investigation into the matter. The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further examination. Three police officers were found responsible for the incident and have been placed under detention.
In addition, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area has been immediately transferred, and a formal inquiry is underway. CSP Abubakar highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to upholding professionalism and accountability in its operations. He assured that disciplinary actions would be taken to maintain public trust and ensure justice.
