Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from Ogun State took to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, blocking the highway in protest over the alleged mismanagement of student loan funds. The demonstration briefly disrupted traffic as students voiced their frustrations over the handling of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), which is intended for student loans.
The students accused the Federal Government of failing to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution of funds meant to support higher education. They also raised concerns about rising tuition fees and the deteriorating conditions at many tertiary institutions across the country.
The protest was resolved peacefully after the Ogun State Police intervened. Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that there were no reports of violence during the protest. She said that the Commissioner of Police, Ogunlowo, met with the protesters, urging them to end the blockade and assured them their concerns would be communicated to the appropriate authorities.
Following the dialogue, the protesters agreed to clear the road and moved to the Ogun State Police Headquarters at Eleweran for further discussions on student advocacy.
The demonstration highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among students over the state of education in Nigeria, especially regarding the allocation of funds meant for student support.
