The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has revealed that over 8,000 terrorists and bandits were neutralized across Nigeria in 2024 under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Matawalle credited the security achievements to renewed operational strategies and the focused leadership of the Tinubu administration, which has drastically improved security in the country.

The Defence Minister made the statement while assessing the performance of the current government. According to Matawalle, the security forces have made significant strides in curbing terrorism and banditry, with more than 11,600 criminals arrested and over 10,000 illegal firearms recovered across the country. The Minister was optimistic that these achievements would positively affect the upcoming elections and help secure a second term for President Tinubu in 2027.

Matawalle’s assessment was shared in a statement released by Patience Ituke on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence on Monday. The statement detailed key security successes, highlighting the government’s efforts in neutralizing terrorist groups, arresting criminal elements, and recovering illegal arms, all of which have contributed to a safer Nigeria.

In addition to the 8,000 terrorists and bandits neutralized in 2024, Matawalle praised the establishment of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell, which has greatly improved coordination among security agencies in the fight against kidnapping. He emphasized that such reforms are critical for reducing the menace of armed criminals and kidnappers who have historically plagued various regions in Nigeria.

“The successful neutralization of over 8,000 terrorists and bandits, the arrest of 11,600 criminals, and the recovery of more than 10,000 illegal weapons are significant accomplishments that show how effective the current administration’s strategies have been in restoring security to the nation,” Matawalle said.

This robust action plan is part of a larger effort by the government to tackle insecurity in the country. Matawalle explained that the focus on security was one of President Tinubu’s core promises during his campaign, and the outcomes so far suggest a serious commitment to safeguarding Nigerian citizens.

Beyond security, Matawalle also praised President Tinubu’s government for its progress in other areas, particularly economic development. He pointed to the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development, which is already helping to reduce the cost of grains and boosting agricultural productivity in the North. This new ministry is seen as a vital tool for addressing food insecurity and supporting Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The Minister also highlighted the government’s focus on infrastructure development, citing ongoing road construction projects and the improvement of transportation networks in underserved regions. These infrastructure projects are expected to drive economic growth, particularly in the northern parts of the country where economic challenges have been more pronounced.

“The creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development is already yielding results, as it is helping to address food security challenges, lower grain prices, and boost agricultural output,” Matawalle stated. He noted that these reforms are not only economically beneficial but are also creating job opportunities for millions of Nigerians, especially in rural areas.

Matawalle expressed confidence that the Tinubu administration’s positive trajectory would continue into the future, helping to secure the President’s re-election bid in 2027. He pointed out that the government’s focus on improving security, boosting agriculture, and developing infrastructure are all part of a broader strategy that will strengthen the nation and create a more prosperous future for Nigerians.

“These transformative reforms by President Tinubu are paving the way for a brighter future for Nigeria, and I believe they will secure his re-election in 2027,” Matawalle said. His remarks underscore the belief that the administration’s approach to governance is delivering tangible results, particularly in areas that directly impact the daily lives of Nigerians.

The Defence Minister’s comments reflect a strong belief in the positive influence of Tinubu’s leadership, as he continues to build on his reform agenda and address the pressing challenges of security, economic development, and infrastructure. Matawalle’s optimism highlights the significant progress that the Tinubu administration has made in its first year in office.

While Matawalle’s assessment paints a positive picture, it is important to note that the successes in security and economic development are ongoing and will require continued efforts to maintain and build upon these gains. The government’s response to issues like insecurity, unemployment, and poverty will be crucial in determining whether these reforms lead to long-term stability and prosperity for Nigeria.
