In a joint operation aimed at tackling the growing menace of drug trafficking in Ogun State, the Amotekun Corps has arrested a man suspected to be behind a major illegal drug trade in the state.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Obi, was apprehended in the bustling Ayetoro market area of Yewa North Local Government Area. The arrest was confirmed on Friday in a statement by CSP Shodeke Sholanke, the Director of Intelligence and Investigation for the Ogun State Security Network, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps.
According to Sholanke, Obi’s arrest followed credible intelligence from the Ogun State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The NDLEA had tipped off Amotekun operatives about Obi’s suspected involvement in transporting and distributing hard drugs across parts of the state.
“Obi had allegedly partnered with a commercial driver known simply as Alausa, who is already in NDLEA custody,” Sholanke explained. “Alausa was hired to transport a large quantity of suspected hard drugs from Abeokuta to Ayetoro. The drugs were valued in millions of naira.”
The operation took a dramatic turn on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, when NDLEA operatives intercepted an 18-seater Mazda bus along the Abeokuta-Ayetoro road. Upon questioning, the driver confessed that the items belonged to Emmanuel Obi.
With this new information, Amotekun quickly swung into action. Working closely with the NDLEA, their operatives tracked and arrested Obi in Ayetoro.
Sholanke said the arrest is part of broader efforts by both agencies to clean up the state and protect communities from the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
“This successful operation highlights our ongoing determination to rid our society of criminal elements. We will continue working hand in hand with the NDLEA to fight drug crimes,” he added.
The Amotekun corps also stressed the need for residents to support the fight against illegal drugs by providing timely and accurate information to security agencies. “Community involvement remains key in stopping the spread of drug abuse and trafficking,” Sholanke said.
The suspect, Emmanuel Obi, has now been handed over to the Ogun command of the NDLEA, where further investigations are underway and prosecution is expected to follow.
Drug trafficking and abuse remain serious issues in parts of Nigeria, with security agencies ramping up their efforts in recent years. The NDLEA, alongside local security outfits like Amotekun, has been active in carrying out raids and arrests to reduce the influence of drug syndicates.
