The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and Navy, has uncovered an illegal artisanal refinery and petrol station in Anambra State. The illicit facility was discovered at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area.
NSCDC State Commandant, Mr. Olatunde Maku, confirmed the discovery on Sunday, revealing that the operation was carried out following credible intelligence about suspected illegal petroleum activities in the area. On Saturday, around 1:35 p.m., NSCDC operatives raided the site, apprehending one suspect, while others fled.
During the operation, the team recovered 49 kegs, each containing 25 liters of suspected adulterated Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and four 200-litre drums believed to contain adulterated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). A pumping machine was also seized. The arrested suspect has been handed over to NSCDC authorities for prosecution.
Maku expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army and Navy for their support in the operation. He also issued a stern warning to illegal refinery operators and individuals impersonating PROTEAN personnel, urging them to stay away from Anambra State. He reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to eradicating illegal petroleum activities and vowed to escalate enforcement actions if criminal activities persist.
The operation serves as a clear message that the NSCDC, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains vigilant in curbing illegal activities in the oil and gas sector in Anambra.
