The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has strongly denied allegations of corruption, insisting that claims of misappropriated funds are baseless. The NPA’s General Manager for Corporate and Strategic Communications, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, issued a statement on Sunday in Lagos, defending the authority’s procurement and financial processes.
According to Onyemekara, the NPA operates within a strict regulatory framework that includes close oversight by the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy, the Budget Office, and the National Assembly. He emphasized that all budgetary provisions and spending are closely monitored, making any misapplication of funds highly unlikely.
The NPA spokesperson specifically addressed concerns about dredging activities at the Warri Escravos Channel. Onyemekara explained that the dredging was necessary due to deteriorating conditions that threatened both maritime navigation and national oil and gas operations. He added that the contract for the dredging work was issued following the emergency procurement procedures outlined in the Procurement Act of 2007.
Onyemekara also dismissed online reports accusing the NPA of multi-billion-naira corruption, calling them false and unfounded. He further clarified that the marine craft procurement process was carried out lawfully in response to urgent national energy security needs.
The NPA official refuted claims of withheld documents and transactions at the NPA’s London office, stating that these allegations had no basis. He attributed the increased 2024 revenues to foreign exchange gains, as port charges are internationally benchmarked in foreign currency.
On staff promotions, Onyemekara confirmed that recent changes, including new General Manager appointments, were made to address age-related stagnation and followed the proper internal procedures. He also highlighted improved staff morale and the successful completion of the 2024 promotion exams.
Lastly, Onyemekara reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to modernizing Nigerian ports, with ongoing infrastructure upgrades and the Port Modernisation Programme, which has received approval from the Federal Executive Council. He urged media outlets to verify reports directly with the NPA, which remains open to constructive dialogue.
