The House of Representatives has directed security agencies to urgently intensify efforts to rescue 18 people kidnapped by sea pirates along the Degema coastal axis in Rivers State.
The directive came after a motion of urgent national importance was raised on Tuesday by Rep. Cyril Hart, who represents Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency.
Hart informed the House that the abduction occurred in March and involved civilians travelling by boat, including a pregnant woman. He expressed deep concern over the safety and well-being of the victims, calling for immediate intervention.
Supporting the motion, Rep. from Baruten/Ikalama Constituency in Kwara State urged the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta to take swift action and end the growing insecurity in the waterways.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu referred the matter to the Committees on Navy and Police for further legislative action and oversight.
The House highlighted the need for urgent rescue operations and better protection of riverine communities vulnerable to pirate attacks.
