Nigerians will soon pay more for their vehicle number plates and driver’s licenses as the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved new price increases. The new rates, which take effect on June 8, 2025, cover both renewals and new applications for various vehicle documents.

According to an official announcement, the revised costs for vehicle and motorcycle number plates, as well as driver’s licenses, include a wide range of fees. For instance, a three-year driver’s license for a motor vehicle will now cost N15,000, while a five-year license will be priced at N21,000. Tricycle and motorcycle driver’s licenses will cost N7,000 for three years and N11,000 for five years.

The new prices for vehicle number plates are as follows: standard private and commercial vehicle plates will cost N30,000 each, while a dealer vehicle number plate will cost N100,000. Other specialized number plates, such as out-of-series or fancy plates, will range from N150,000 to N400,000, depending on the type.

In addition, motorcycle number plates will be priced at N12,000 for a standard plate and up to N50,000 for a fancy motorcycle number plate.

The JTB explained that these price adjustments are due to the introduction of enhanced security features on the number plates and driver’s licenses, as well as rising production costs.

The updated prices will be enforced nationwide, and the public is advised to apply for their documents via the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS) portal or at designated licensing authorities. The JTB also warned Nigerians to be cautious of touts and to ensure they pay only the official, approved fees.
