Fresh Violence Rocks Plateau: 10 Dead, Cows Rustled

    Share

At least 10 people have been killed and dozens of cows rustled in fresh violence in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The latest attacks are linked to tensions between herders and farmers over cattle encroachment and farm destruction.

According to Operation Safe Haven, the crisis began on Monday, May 12, when some youths in Dayan village reportedly slaughtered and rustled cattle that had strayed into their farmland. In what appeared to be a reprisal, suspected Fulani herders attacked Danchindo village the next day, killing four people.

Violence continued on May 14, when 26 cows were killed in Darwat community, allegedly in retaliation for the killings. That same day, six people were killed in another suspected reprisal attack near Wereng Kam community.

Security personnel have since moved into the affected areas to restore calm. One suspect has been arrested, and 130 stolen cows have been recovered and returned to their owners. The military said their prompt action prevented Wereng village from being burned down completely.

Major General Folusho Oyinlola, who leads Operation Safe Haven, visited Riyom and met with local leaders in a bid to calm tensions. He urged both Fulani and Berom communities to avoid further violence and work with security agents to restore peace.
