Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has shared a harrowing personal experience of surviving an assassination attempt, highlighting the importance of courage, patience, and integrity. Speaking at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) graduation ceremony for the Class of 2025, Atiku recounted the terrifying incident to inspire the graduating students.
During his address, Atiku revealed that during a period of political unrest, he faced an assassination attempt at his residence in Kaduna. To protect his family, he hid his wife and children in a wardrobe before confronting the attackers. Despite being shot at, he remained unharmed. He recounted standing up to the assailants and demanding an explanation for their actions, emphasizing that this act exemplified true courage.
Atiku used this personal story to encourage the graduates to face challenges with bravery and to uphold their values even in the face of adversity. He stressed that patience is not a sign of weakness but a strength that can lead to eventual success. He also shared that during Nigeria’s military era, he was offered a governorship position without an election, which he declined, choosing instead to pursue leadership through democratic means. This decision eventually led to his election as Vice President in 1999.
Reflecting on his political journey, Atiku paid tribute to his mentor, the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who demonstrated remarkable composure even when facing a death sentence. He recounted how Yar’Adua’s blood pressure remained normal on the day of his scheduled execution, showcasing the epitome of courage.
Atiku urged the graduates to build their futures on a foundation of integrity and resilience. He advised them to avoid shortcuts and to remain steadfast in their principles, emphasizing that true success comes from perseverance and ethical conduct.
