Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has addressed the nature of his recent visit to the Vatican, emphasizing its spiritual significance over political interpretations.
Obi attended the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025, joining a congregation of approximately 200,000 individuals, including global leaders and dignitaries.
In a statement shared on his verified social media account, Obi described the event as a “deeply solemn and reflective” experience, aligning with his history of participating in significant global ceremonies. He stated, “My participation in the inauguration ceremony was in line with my previous witnessing of inaugurations, swearing-ins, and official ceremonies across the world—this was no exception.”
Addressing speculations about the political implications of his presence, Obi clarified, “This was never a political event and should remain untouched by politics. Some moments are best reserved for quiet contemplation.”
Obi also noted that he did not attend the Papal Audience following the Mass, explaining that such meetings with the Pope were reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats. “After the inaugural Mass, I did not attend the Papal Audience and therefore did not have the opportunity to meet the Holy Father personally,” he said.
Reflecting on Pope Leo XIV’s homily, Obi highlighted the Pope’s call to address poverty and promote unity beyond ethnic, political, and religious divides. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the moral and spiritual messages conveyed during such events, rather than the ceremonial aspects.
During the inauguration, Obi was seen exchanging greetings with President Bola Tinubu and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi. The interaction, described as cordial, was noted by observers as a moment of unity among Nigerian leaders.
Obi’s participation in the Vatican ceremony underscores his commitment to engaging in events of global spiritual significance, reinforcing the importance of moral leadership and unity in addressing societal challenges.
