The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 21 members of the Kano State team who died in a tragic accident after participating in the just concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

In a condolence message sent to the Governor of Kano State, Mallam Abba Kabiru Yusuf, and the affected families, Senator Akpabio described the incident as “devastating” and “painful.” The message was released on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh.

Akpabio, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the closing ceremony of the festival in Abeokuta on Friday, said the entire country was mourning the sudden and tragic loss.

“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of over 20 members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State,” Akpabio stated. “This devastating loss is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our youth.”

He extended his sympathy to the Kano State government and urged Nigerians to stand in unity with the families of the deceased during this difficult period. “We stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and pray for their swift healing and comfort,” he said.

The Senate President also emphasized the need to ensure safer conditions for Nigerians, especially those involved in national programmes such as sports festivals. He urged that lessons be learned from the tragedy to prevent future occurrences.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their memories inspire us to work towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for all Nigerians,” he concluded.

The tragic loss has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a celebration of youth and sports. The National Sports Festival, often referred to as Nigeria’s “Olympics,” brings together young athletes from across the country to compete and showcase talent. The Kano contingent was returning home when the unfortunate accident occurred.

The nation continues to mourn the loss of these young athletes and officials.
