The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s escalating security crisis, revealing that bandits and Boko Haram insurgents are operating freely within many communities across the country.
Speaking at the 60th birthday celebration of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, in Abuja, Sanusi emphasized that the nation is already in a state of crisis. He stated, “We are living with bandits and Boko Haram; we are already there. We are already in crisis; it has already happened. The question is how do we get out of it.”
Sanusi’s remarks highlight the alarming reality that insurgents and criminal groups have infiltrated various parts of Nigeria, posing a significant threat to national security and public safety.
The Emir of Kano has called on the federal government and relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to address the growing insecurity in Nigeria. He stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy that includes strengthening the judicial system, enhancing military capabilities, and fostering community engagement to combat the activities of bandits and insurgents.
Sanusi’s call for action comes amid reports of increased attacks by Boko Haram and its factions, including the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in North-Eastern Nigeria. These groups have employed advanced tactics such as armed drones and roadside explosives, leading to numerous casualties and displacement of civilians.
The Emir emphasized that without a concerted effort to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment, the situation may continue to deteriorate.
