The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of a notorious gang wanted for terrorising different parts of the state. The suspects, aged between 28 and 48, were picked up during a routine patrol on Thursday, according to the police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
The arrest is part of the command’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and rid Lagos of criminal gangs. Hundeyin said the suspects were intercepted by patrol officers who became suspicious after the men failed to give proper information about their movements and identities.
“A thorough search was carried out, leading to the recovery of two locally made pistols, 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 17 live cartridges, and an unregistered 1999 Toyota Camry,” Hundeyin stated in a press release issued on Monday.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects are linked to a gang already on the police watchlist. The gang has reportedly operated across several parts of Lagos, causing fear among residents through robberies and other violent crimes.
Hundeyin confirmed that the suspects are now cooperating with investigators and have started giving useful information that may lead to more arrests and the dismantling of the gang’s network. “Investigations are ongoing. We are following leads to uncover more details and track down any accomplices,” he said.
Once investigations are concluded, the suspects will be charged in court.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has commended the officers involved in the operation. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all Lagos residents.
He urged members of the public to stay alert and continue supporting the police by reporting any suspicious movement or activity in their neighbourhoods.
“The police are committed to protecting lives and property. We will not relent in our fight against crime,” CP Jimoh said through the statement.
Lagos has seen a series of police operations in recent months aimed at curbing rising incidents of armed robbery, cult clashes, and gang-related violence, especially in densely populated areas like Mushin, Ajegunle, and Agege.
This latest arrest is seen as a positive step in the command’s broader strategy to maintain peace and ensure that criminal elements are flushed out of the state.
Residents have welcomed the news with relief, hoping for a safer environment as police intensify efforts to make Lagos more secure.
