The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has praised President Bola Tinubu for posthumously honouring Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the man who conducted Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

President Tinubu, during the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, awarded Nwosu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). The election Nwosu conducted is widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest, though it was annulled by the military regime.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze said the recognition, though late, was a welcome development. He called Nwosu a man of courage who upheld the mandate of the people at great personal risk.

Ohanaeze further urged the Federal Government to take a step further by naming the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after Nwosu, in honour of his service to Nigeria’s democracy.

“We appreciate the honour, but we also ask that INEC Headquarters be named after Prof. Nwosu for his sacrifice during the military era,” Chukwu said.

The group also used the occasion to comment on the country’s economic situation. Ohanaeze expressed concern over high inflation, poor exchange rates, and rising poverty levels, noting that the Federal Government’s economic reforms have yet to positively impact Nigerians.

Chukwu also renewed the call for the restructuring of Nigeria, arguing that without it, economic and security challenges would remain. He stressed that restructuring would bring about resource control, fiscal federalism, and true federalism, which are necessary for national growth.
