CDS Blames Insider Sabotage for Benue Killings

    Share

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has raised alarm over possible insider involvement in the recent killings in Benue State, saying attackers may be getting help from people within the affected communities.

General Musa made the statement on Monday during a visit to Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, where more than 100 people were killed by armed attackers last Saturday.

“The way the houses were burned shows these attacks were targeted. That suggests that some people are giving the attackers information,” General Musa said.

He described the killings as “one too many” and promised that the military will change its strategy to focus more on local intelligence and community cooperation.

“We can’t do it alone. We need support from the communities. Security is everyone’s responsibility,” he added.

The CDS said the military will start working more closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community members to rebuild trust and ensure lasting peace.

General Musa also announced plans to visit neighbouring Nasarawa State to boost border security, which he said is key to stopping attackers from entering Benue through the borders.

“We get reports that these killers come from across the borders. We won’t wait for them to strike again. We will go after them,” he said.

He urged Nigerian youths to remain hopeful and not lose faith in the country.

“This is our home. We will not give it up. This madness must end,” he said firmly.

Reacting to the visit, Chairman of Guma Local Government, Maurice Orwough, said the people now have renewed hope.

“This visit shows that the federal government is paying attention. It gives us a chance to tell the real story and what we need,” Orwough said.

He added that the CDS’s presence will help rebuild trust between the people and the authorities.
