Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has cleared a backlog of Universal Basic Education (UBE) matching grants for 2019, 2020, and 2021, a move that now qualifies the state to access the 2022, 2023, and 2024 grants from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The development was announced on Friday in Awka by the Chairperson of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, during a midterm review of the implementation of UBE projects in the state.
Nwadinobi revealed that the backlog had accumulated due to the state’s inability to meet counterpart funding requirements before Soludo took office in March 2022.
“For Anambra to access the recent UBE funds, it was necessary to clear the outstanding obligations. Governor Soludo graciously approved and paid the backlog,” she stated.
She added that Soludo’s commitment to education funding is aimed at improving the quality of basic education across the state. “We are proud to say Anambra is back to winning ways,” she said.
To further align with federal requirements, Anambra recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UBEC on June 16. This agreement enabled the state to participate in a key training session on new funding access procedures held in Abuja from June 19 to 20, 2025, and led by UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba.
Soludo’s administration continues to focus on education as a priority, with officials at ASUBEB promising to sustain implementation of the governor’s vision for a stronger, better-funded school system.
