Tragedy struck in Osara village, Obantoko area of Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, on Saturday when lightning killed 32 cows during a heavy rainstorm.
The cows, which were being sheltered by Fulani herders from the downpour, were struck by lightning around 2 p.m. The incident left the herders in deep shock and sorrow.
Confirming the sad development, the village head, Baale Wasiu Afolabi, said the herders rushed to him after discovering the lifeless animals.
“On Saturday, the Fulani herders came to my house to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows. I followed them to their settlement and saw the dead animals myself. We’ve reported the case to Aregbe Police Division and also informed the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo,” Baale Afolabi said.
He added that a meeting will be held with the affected herders to discuss ways to prevent such a disaster in the future and maintain peace in the community.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident in a message to journalists. He said the case had been reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Aregbe, and officers were quickly sent to the area.
The rare natural incident has sparked conversations in the area, as residents expressed concern over the safety of livestock during extreme weather conditions.
