United States President Donald Trump is facing strong backlash at home after ordering airstrikes on key nuclear facilities in Iran, with members of Congress accusing him of acting without proper approval.
The airstrikes, which targeted Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, were announced by President Trump on Sunday. He claimed the mission was successful and that US military jets had safely returned.
But the action has sparked outrage, especially among Democrats, who say the President violated the US Constitution by launching military attacks without Congressional approval.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a leading Democrat from New York, said Trump’s decision could lead to long-term conflict and called it grounds for impeachment.
“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorisation is a grave violation of the Constitution,” she said. “He has risked launching a war that may trap the US for generations.”
She was joined by other Democrats who also called for impeachment, although many admit they do not have the numbers in Congress to remove the President at this time.
Surprisingly, Trump is also facing criticism from within his own party. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a strong Trump supporter, and Republican lawmaker Thomas Massie also questioned the legality of the strikes.
“This is not Constitutional,” Rep. Massie said in a brief comment.
The US Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war, but presidents have often used military force without direct approval. This latest incident, however, has renewed debate over the limits of presidential power, especially when dealing with international conflict.
Trump’s move comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and growing global concerns about stability in the region.
As of now, there has been no response from Iran regarding the full impact of the attacks.
