Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated a new Management Board to oversee state-owned social homes, while also granting clemency to 11 inmates serving time in correctional centres across the state.

At the inauguration ceremony held at the Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to caring for the poor and vulnerable. He stressed that no society can grow if its weakest members are neglected.

“We promised inclusive prosperity and economic growth. That growth must reflect in how we treat the vulnerable,” Mbah said. “That is why this Board is important. We want to ensure our social homes provide comfort and dignity.”

The newly constituted board is chaired by the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah. Co-chairing the board is Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, with Rev. Canon Chibuike Okolo as Vice Chairman. Other members include religious leaders, lawyers, and social workers, while Barr. Uzoama Okeji will serve as the Executive Secretary.

Mrs. Mbah charged the board to be transparent and committed in their work, urging them to prioritise the welfare of children and vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, Governor Mbah also announced the release of 11 inmates from Enugu correctional centres. The move is part of efforts to decongest prisons and give reformed inmates a second chance at life.

The inmates were granted clemency under the Governor’s constitutional power of Prerogative of Mercy, based on reports of good conduct, rehabilitation, and skill acquisition during their time in custody.

The decision followed recommendations from the state’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and supported by the Nigerian Correctional Service, CAPIO, and CIDJAP.

Governor Mbah said the gesture reflects his government’s commitment to justice, compassion, and reintegration.
