Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing into law a set of tax reform bills, calling it a bold move that will help grow Nigeria’s economy and ease the tax burden on low-income earners and small businesses.
In a statement on Thursday, Governor Abiodun described the new laws as a “huge milestone” and a major step toward creating a fairer, more transparent tax system that will benefit both citizens and state governments.
He said the reforms will not only simplify tax processes but also ensure that poor Nigerians are not overburdened. “By streamlining taxation and exempting the poor from undue tax burdens, the bills respond to a major demand of economic growth,” the governor said.
Abiodun also highlighted the importance of sharing Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue more fairly among states, which he said would help states like Ogun fund development projects and reduce their dependence on the federal government.
The governor applauded President Tinubu for consulting widely before signing the bills, noting that the reforms reflect the input of various stakeholders, including the business community and the Nigerian Governors Forum.
“These bills are the result of years of advocacy for a more transparent and efficient tax system. They will make it easier to attract investment, grow businesses, and create jobs,” he added.
Governor Abiodun concluded with an optimistic message for Nigerians: “Good times are ahead.”
