Retired Officers to Hit Streets July 21 in Nationwide Pension Protest

Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have announced plans to embark on a nationwide peaceful protest over their long-standing demand for the Nigeria Police Force to be removed from the pension scheme.

The Kaduna State Chapter of the union made this known in a joint statement signed by its Chairman, Retired CSP Mannir M. Lawal Zaria, and Vice Chairman, Retired ASP Danlami Maigamo. The group said the protest, tagged the “Mother of All Peaceful Protests,” is scheduled to take place on July 21, 2025, across the country.

The planned demonstration follows several failed attempts by the retirees to get a response from the National Assembly and other relevant authorities concerning their complaints. The group said they remain committed to peaceful engagement and will continue to push for the creation of a Police Pension Board separate from the current pension structure.

“As law-abiding citizens, we shall continue to pursue our demand for the Nigeria Police to be exited from the CPS through peaceful means until our voices are heard,” the statement read.

The protest decision was reached during a key meeting held in Kaduna, which focused on unresolved concerns surrounding the welfare of retired police officers under the CPS.

Earlier this year, between February 24 and March 3, retirees from the Kaduna and Bauchi State Chapters held a similar protest at the National Assembly complex in Abuja. Written complaints were submitted to five key offices, including the Senate and House Committees on Police Affairs and the Director of the DSS.

However, the union expressed frustration that there has been no feedback from the National Assembly, especially concerning the outcome of a public hearing held on November 19, 2024, regarding the proposed establishment of a Police Pension Board.

The retirees are now calling for swift government action, warning that their patience is wearing thin.
