In what appears to be a sign of reconciliation, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his predecessor and Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, were seen together in public on Saturday.
The trio attended a funeral service in Rumueprikom, Wike’s hometown in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, just two days after a fresh round of peace talks with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The political leaders, who have been at loggerheads for nearly two years over control of the state’s political structure, appeared together following President Tinubu’s renewed call for unity and an end to the prolonged crisis.
Other prominent political figures at the event included Senators Allwell Onyesoh, George Thompson Sekibo, and Olaka Nwogu; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche; ex-lawmaker Ken Chikere; APC South-South Vice Chairman, Victor Giadom; and former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja.
Sources say Governor Fubara is expected to meet with his core supporters behind closed doors to explain the details of his recent discussions with President Tinubu and Wike.
The public appearance of Fubara and Wike together has sparked fresh hopes that the political tension in Rivers State may finally be easing.
