President Bola Tinubu has announced a new scholarship scheme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), starting next academic year. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip Pierre, on Monday in Gros Islet.
The scholarship program is part of a wider plan to strengthen ties between Nigeria and the OECS countries in education, trade, and development. A joint committee made up of representatives from both Nigeria and OECS member states will oversee the program’s rollout and finalize the details.
President Tinubu said the initiative aims to build closer people-to-people connections and boost cooperation in agriculture, food security, and other sectors. He also revealed plans to introduce visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS nations to make travel easier.
Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the plan, calling it a timely and practical way to strengthen relations. He said the visa issue and improving air links, trade, and tourism are top priorities for Nigeria and the OECS.
This new cooperation reflects Nigeria’s goal to deepen relationships with Caribbean countries and expand educational and business opportunities.
