Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The victims were reportedly shot at close range during a peaceful meeting in the community.
Describing the act as “barbaric” and “a direct attack on peace and unity,” Nwifuru said such violence against law-abiding citizens was completely unacceptable.
The governor made his position known in a statement released Tuesday night by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor.
According to the statement, Governor Nwifuru has already contacted his Anambra State counterpart, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, urging for a full, swift, and transparent investigation into the killings.
He also called on the Anambra State Government and security agencies to identify and bring the killers to justice, warning that any failure or delay could affect the good relationship between the two states.
While assuring the families of the victims that justice would be served, Nwifuru urged residents of Ebonyi, especially those directly affected not to take the law into their hands.
“State arsenals will be deployed to unmask the perpetrators. Such barbarism has no place in a modern society,” the governor said.
Governor Nwifuru also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and property of all Ebonyi citizens both at home and in other parts of the country.
He promised to personally monitor the investigation and ensure that those behind the killings are held accountable, with no sacred cows.
