Tragedy struck in Galadanchi village, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Monday, as a 70-year-old man allegedly killed his sister during a heated quarrel over a family land dispute.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Adam. The suspect, identified as Adamu Yakubu, reportedly attacked his 45-year-old sister, Hannatu Hashimu, during an argument over the sharing of inherited land.
According to the police, the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on July 1, 2025.
“What began as a verbal argument turned violent when the suspect allegedly stabbed his sister with a stick,” SP Adam stated.
After the confrontation, the victim returned to her matrimonial home visibly shaken and later fainted. Family members rushed her to Dutse General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead by medical staff.
Police arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody and cooperating with investigators.
“The stick used in the assault was recovered and kept as evidence,” SP Adam added, noting that the suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is concluded.
This incident adds to the growing concern over violent disputes linked to land and family inheritance issues across rural communities in Nigeria.
