Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, surprised many Nigerians on social media after publicly expressing support and admiration for Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Bashir, who was previously known for criticizing Obi, shared a photo of the former Anambra governor and his father at a coalition meeting held on Wednesday, July 2. In his caption, Bashir wrote, “He don dey mature,” in reference to the coalition and Obi’s growing political influence.
His post stirred reactions from users on X (formerly Twitter), with one person asking if he had changed his mind about Peter Obi. Bashir replied, “I now love Peter Obi,” and even used the popular Northern political slogan, “Sai Peter Obi,” in his message — a phrase usually reserved for popular Northern politicians.
Responding to criticism over his change of heart, Bashir said he is entitled to shift his political views just like other influencers have done in the past.
His declaration comes amid rising support for political coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections, and has sparked conversations about shifting loyalties among young political voices in Nigeria.
