A tragic road accident on Sunday morning claimed the lives of 21 people along the Zaria–Kano highway. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano confirmed the incident, which occurred around 8:23 a.m. at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsalle.
According to a statement by the FRSC Public Education Officer, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, the crash involved a DAF trailer (GWL 422 ZE) and a Toyota Hummer bus (KMC 171 YM). Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver violated traffic rules by driving against the route, leading to a head-on collision.
The impact of the crash sparked a fire that consumed both vehicles. A total of 24 people were involved in the accident. Sadly, 21 were confirmed dead, while three others sustained injuries.
FRSC rescue teams quickly responded to the scene, along with support from the Federal and State Fire Services. The charred remains of the victims were taken to Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary in Kano, while the injured were rushed to Garun Malam General Hospital for treatment.
The accident caused a temporary blockage on the highway, which was later cleared by FRSC and the Nigeria Police to restore normal traffic flow.
FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander MB Bature, expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He also called on motorists to avoid dangerous driving, especially route violations and night travel, to prevent similar incidents.
The FRSC restated its commitment to road safety and urged all road users to obey traffic rules and stay alert while on the road.
