Former Labour Party presidential candidate and 2027 hopeful, Peter Obi, has said the northern region of Nigeria will celebrate his presidency if elected. He made this bold statement during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television.

Obi, who is now a leading figure in the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), argued that the North is Nigeria’s most valuable yet underutilised region.

He said, “The biggest asset of this country is in the North — the uncultivated lands. The criminality we face in the North today, I will deal with it. If I am president, the North will celebrate me. I have an idea of the problem.”

Obi added that Nigeria has suffered because voters have often made choices based on tribe and religion instead of competence.

“We have voted for incompetence, we’ve voted for tribe, we’ve voted for religion; let’s vote for competence,” he said.

Obi stressed that with strong leadership, peace and development can return to the North, allowing the region to fully tap into its agricultural and economic potential. He also highlighted the North’s voter strength and fertile land as key national assets that must not be ignored.
